They work and take care of dependents: early retirement?

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, announced this Wednesday the creation, “imminently”, of a working group with the purpose of analyzing and evaluating the setting of reducing coefficients of the retirement age to people who combine their jobs with elderly care worker dependents.

This was indicated by the minister in the Government control session in Congress, when asked by the deputy of the PNV Idoia Sagastizabal for the procedure that the Executive has planned to incorporate the early retirement of workers and, in turn, caregivers of highly dependent people.

“We are going to imminently create a working group to analyze the morbidity and possible conditions of the caregivers and I say caregivers because it is mainly women who care for dependent people,” said Minister Saiz.

In his opinion, “it is necessary to carry out this analysis in order to adopt the measures considered necessary by the technical services of Social Security.” He has also reported that this Thursday, by ministerial order, the Evaluation Commission in charge of issuing a report on the concurrence of objective circumstances that justify the application of reducing coefficients.

“On different occasions and with total transparency, we have been informing the Chamber of the processing of the new regulations regarding the application of the reducing coefficients and we will continue to do so as many times as necessary and appropriate,” declared the minister, who added that “The rest of the administrations can also join in to provide aid and resources that, in each case, are necessary.”

“We need to move much faster”

In response to the explanation from the head of the Social Security portfolio, the nationalist deputy replied: “It took us two years to create a working group. We value it, but it is necessary to move much faster because those people need it. You said that caring for people with dependency is the responsibility of all administrations. “We’re late.”

Previously, Idoia Sagastizabal has warned that The “burden” of care “limits job opportunities, professional development and personal well-being”. Furthermore, the parliamentarian has indicated that “normally it is women who assume this burden”, which shows “a clear gender inequality in the work and personal lives of those they care for.”

“We recognize that important steps have been taken to improve the contributions of non-professional carers, but this is not enough. These people they need to be able to retire earlier for health reasons because the physical and emotional overload of this care has a real and cumulative impact on their well-being,” he insisted, while recalling that the PNV already raised this situation with him in 2024 and that the response “has not yet arrived.”

Finally, Elma Saiz has defended that “it has not been two years without work, quite the opposite.” “We continue walking in the same line”the minister has settled.
